     Great Island (also known as Sebascodegan Island) is the most central part of Harpswell; home to the town office and local elementary school. Harpswell Community School is one of 6 elementary schools that make up the MSAD 75 school district, comprising 4 local towns; Harpswell, Topsham, Bowdoin & Bowdoinham. Both the Junior High & High Schools are located in Topsham; about a 20 minute drive from Harpswell center! Mt. Ararat High School has an enrollment of approximately 750 students in grades 9 -12. Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Mt. Ararat serves the second largest district geographically in the State of Maine.

     Other benefits of Great Island living, besides the equidistant access to town & sea, are the great hiking trails located behind the town office & Trufant Summerton Ball Field as well as convenient access to the SAFE HARBOR Great Island Boat Yard (GIBY) situated along Route 24 in Quahog Bay.
